FREE! NOW STREAMING: Rep. Rashida Tlaib & Peter Beinart at UMass on Gaza & Protest

U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and journalist and author Peter Beinart appear at UMass-Amherst in separate events two weeks ago.

Two weeks ago, MEF had the honor of co-sponsoring a pair of riveting events at UMass-Amherst featuring U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and acclaimed journalist and author Peter Beinart, two of the most prominent and influential pro-Palestinian voices in the country.

The events, which drew large audiences and are now streaming free online, focused on Israel’s escalating U.S.-backed war of annihilation in Gaza, the systematic dehumanization of Palestinians within Israel and the U.S., and accelerating efforts to censor and criminalize pro-Palestinian speech on American college campuses and beyond.

Both events were organized by Sut Jhally, Professor Emeritus of Communication at UMass-Amherst, where earlier this year police in riot gear zip-tied and arrested more than 130 students, faculty, and community members who were peacefully protesting the university’s financial ties with companies that supply arms to Israel.

Tlaib is an original member of “The Squad,” the only Palestinian American in Congress, and a fierce critic of the Biden-Harris administration’s active role in Israel’s ongoing mass slaughter in Gaza. While her unapologetic defense of Palestinian rights has earned her condemnation from the Biden White House, censure from the House of Representatives, and repeated smears from corporate media outlets like CNN and Fox, Tlaib was easily reelected to a fourth term in Michigan's 12th Congressional District on Nov. 5th.

Beinart, an orthodox Jew who was once a staunch defender of Israel and a prominent center-left supporter of the Iraq war, has emerged as a leading critic of U.S. militarism, a stalwart defender of Palestinian rights, and one of mainstream media’s most outspoken opponents of Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land and its war of annihilation in Gaza. Beinart is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times, Editor-at-Large for Jewish Currents, a political commentator for MSNBC and CNN, and Professor of Journalism and Political Science at CUNY. He is also the author of several books, including the bestselling The Crisis of Zionism (2012) and the forthcoming Being Jewish after the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning (due out on January 28, 2025).

Acclaimed Palestinian American writer, editor, and publisher Michel Moushabeck served as the moderator at both events, which MEF co-sponsored with Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, Resistance Studies, Faculty for Justice in Palestine, and Interlink Books.
